Dresden's Christmas markets are among the best known in Europe, and from Prague they are close enough for a single day. With a private driver the trip becomes an easy afternoon and evening rather than a logistics exercise.
The markets worth your time
The Striezelmarkt on the Altmarkt is the centrepiece: Germany's oldest Christmas market, first held in 1434 and open from 25 November to 24 December in 2026. Near the Frauenkirche, the Neumarkt market has craft stalls and an illuminated pyramid, while the Augustusmarkt across the river in the Neustadt feels more local. The medieval market in the Stallhof courtyard adds knights, craftsmen and fire shows.
What to eat and drink
Try the Dresdner Christstollen, the city's famous Christmas cake, and Pulsnitz gingerbread. The Stollen Festival takes place on the second weekend of Advent (Saturday 5 December 2026). Mulled wine comes in a deposit mug, usually €3–5, which you can return for a refund or keep as a souvenir.
Planning the day
Dresden is roughly 150 km and 1.5–2 hours from Prague. Leave in the late morning, spend the early afternoon in the baroque old town — the Frauenkirche, Zwinger and Semperoper are all close to the markets — and be at the stalls by dusk, when they are at their best. Bring some euro cash for the smaller craft stalls, dress warmly, and avoid Advent Saturdays if you prefer fewer crowds.
Why go with a private driver
Street parking in central Dresden is paid and busy in December, and the journey home is easier when nobody has to drive after a glass of mulled wine. Your driver drops you in the old town, waits or collects you when you are ready, and takes you back to your Prague address. A Mercedes-Benz E-Class suits a couple or a small family, the V-Class up to seven, and the Sprinter larger groups.
Dates and hours are the published 2026 schedule and can change — check the official market websites before you travel.
